An exclusive agreement between Collins Bus Corp. and CleanFuel USA will result in the first Type A school bus to operate on autogas with a liquid propane injection (LPI) system. CleanFuel is the only company to currently offer an EPA- and CARB-certified system on the General Motors 6.0-L gasoline engine cutaway chassis. Collins will soon offer this system as an option for several of its GM dual rear wheel models. CleanFuel’s LPI system replaces only the gasoline fuel tank, fuel pump, and injector rails with an OEM-compatible propane fuel system. This modification reportedly results in lower intake valve temperatures, denser air-fuel charges, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, more complete combustion, and improved fuel economy and performance. The system can also reduce transportation costs, said CleanFuel USA President and CEO Curtis Donaldson, since “propane is roughly 40 to 50% less than gasoline/diesel per gallon.”
